Gas Safety Model

Our Newest Safety Model Helps Utilities Deliver Important Safety Messages to Natural Gas or Propane Users

Utilities selling natural or propane gas can teach valuable safety lessons with the new Gas Safety Model. It can be ordered in either a natural gas or propane version. Differences between the models include signage on the pumping facility, processing plant photos and propane storage tanks for the propane model.

The model consists of four separate panels. They are hinged and fold into a box measuring 18 inches wide by 26 inches long by 14 inches high. Two removable side panels can be customized with the purchasing utility’s logo and/or safety message.

The model includes a photo of either a natural gas refinery or propane storage facility.

Both versions contain a pumping/pressurization station surrounded by a fence and proper warning signs.

Each model has a house section showing the interiors of a living room, kitchen and garage. An unvented space heater is in the living room. Curtains are mounted nearby to demonstrate hazards of locating flammable materials too close to the heater. The kitchen shows a range with the oven door open. A child standing on a chair is reaching over the stovetop burners. Curtains are mounted nearby.

Kitchen cautions are to beware of flammable materials near flames; don’t heat a room with the oven, and keep children away from the cooking area. The garage contains a gas water heater with a gasoline can and lawn mower stored nearby. Garage cautions are to keep flammable liquids away from gas water heaters. The house section features a spring-loaded roof section that pops up when a latch is released to simulate a gas explosion. Plastic figures of a policeman, fireman and gas company employee come with the model.

A gas meter and excavation site are located in front of the house section. The model is notched on the side to illustrate an excavation site. A gas line is visible below grade. A backhoe is mounted so the blade can be lowered to contact the gas line.

The Gas Model comes with a 5 gallon capacity air tank. Valves located behind the house allow the presenter to direct the air to the excavation site where it escapes through the gas line, simulating a line break. Two additional valves can direct pressurized air to escape at the pressurization station or at the meter, creating an audible hiss.

With the propane model, different sized tanks are included to illustrate the distances they should be located from buildings.
